These free experiences, attractions and sights won't cost you a cent. Here are some ideas to enjoy the Dubbo Region on a budget.
1. Heritage Walks
Step back in time and explore Dubbo’s history on a self-guided heritage walk. Pick up a map from the Visitor Information Centre and discover stories from the region’s past.
2. Dubbo CBD Dance Floor
As the sun sets, head to the Cyril Flood Rotunda on Macquarie Street and watch the ground light up - kids will love dancing on this glowing outdoor floor.
3. Disc Golf Course
Located near Sandy Beach Reserve, Dubbo’s 18-hole disc golf course is fun for all ages. Bring your own frisbee or grab one from the Visitor Information Centre.
4. Taronga Western Plains Zoo – Visitor Plaza
Enjoy free access to the Zoo’s Visitor Plaza, where you can take in views over Savannah Lake and spot primates near the Zoo Café and Bar.
5. Western Plains Cultural Centre Museum
Explore Dubbo’s rich history through fascinating artefacts and exhibitions at the regional museum - perfect for a relaxed, cultural stop.
6. Tracker Riley Cycleway
Cycle or stroll along this scenic 13km loop named after Alec ‘Tracker’ Riley, the first Aboriginal tracker to reach the rank of Sergeant. Extending from the CBD to Dundullimal Homestead and Taronga Western Plains Zoo, it’s perfect for all ages.
7. Wellington Caves Ancient Landscapes Gallery
Located at the Wellington Caves Visitor Experience Centre, this free gallery offers an interactive journey through 400 million years of history. Discover ancient seas, life-sized megafauna and Wiradjuri stories while learning what scientists are uncovering today.
8. Terramungamine Rock Grooves Cultural Site
Follow interpretive signage along this short riverside walk to one of Australia’s most significant Aboriginal cultural sites. View over 150 rock grooves carved by the Wiradjuri people and learn about its importance as a traditional meeting place.
9. Dubbo Regional Botanic Gardens
Explore five unique garden spaces including the Shoyoen Japanese Garden, Biodiversity Garden, Sensory Garden, Oasis Valley and the Wiradjuri Garden. A peaceful, nature-filled experience perfect for all ages.
10. Public Art
The streets and spaces of the Dubbo Region are alive with colour and creativity. Keep an eye out for the Pearl Gibbs mural by Adnate, the 100m Macquarie Homestay mural, the Dubbo Visitor Information Centre mural and the bronze statue of William ‘Bill’ Ferguson near the Cyril Flood Rotunda.
